WTF Wednesday: What’s Not Sustainable About Sex?

Aimed at attendees of the UN climate summit, Copenhagen’s mayor Ritt Bjeregaard has circulated postcards to the city’s 150-plus hotels urging them to advise guests not to patronize prostitutes during their stay. “Be sustainable – don’t buy sex” was the message.

It should be noted that prostitution is legal in Denmark and the sex workers are PO’d about these missives. In response, the Sex Workers Interest Group has said its members would offer free sex to any participant in the conference, on production of the offending postcard and their “COP 15” badge.

I’m still stuck on the whole “be sustainable” aspect of this. Aren’t the postcards asking people to be sustainable waste in and of themselves? How is getting a little nookie for cash any worse for the planet than the free kind? Maybe the mayor would feel better if he read up on Planet Green’s tips to green your sex life?
