I “get” kawaii. I like cute stuff. I understand the appeal.
I also get irony. I am, after all, a postmodern Gen Y-er. To someone of my age and disposition, irony is the peas to my cynicism’s carrots.
So to combine the cuteness of kawaii with the irony that has been the life-blood of the last few generations seems like a no-brainer.
But something about kawaii-styled pooh smells funny (ZING!)
This is nothing against designer Undoboy, who has a much more impressive design resume than I do, and who seems to have a relatively concrete aesthetic that he works from and within.
But poop is poop. It is, quite literally, waste. And the deranged notion amongst kawaii enthusiasts that illustrating anything in a kawaii style makes it adorable, regardless of how noxious it actually is, is ridiculous. And while we’re calling spades spades, let’s also acknowledge that avoiding poop’s natural, um, “hue” in lieu of a more aesthetically-pleasing rainbow palette is cheating.
That said, be sure to be on the lookout for my upcoming design, “Pastel Vomit”. Two can play at this game, Undoboy!

It’s no secret that Baptist evangelical Freddie Gage’s All My Friends Are Dead sermon LP has spawned a lot of homages and parodies over the years. I had initially thought about doing this design “straight”, using an actual historical figure. But the wife made a suggestion last night (after I had already completed the design, as is often the case) that maybe a zombie might be a better subject. After my customary tantrum at having to scrap hours of work, I got started on the revision. It turns out she was right (as is often the case.)

Lately I’ve been reading a few web comics and it got me thinking about how this blog has become more rant and less illustration. Although most of my sketchpad is dedicated to t-shirt designs, I’ve decided to branch out and throw in some comic strip fun. So here’s my first of hopefully many absurd comics, featuring Medusa at the beauty salon.

If you like my new comic you can vote for it over at Top Web Comics.

Cats are awesome, therefore I am in the process of designing more kitty themed apparel. Unfortunately, clothing featuring kitties is often the look favored by frumpy, suburban housewives. I’m working cat apparel of a different ilk. So meet the new kitties:

Fuzz Aldrin is a space kitty, exploring the depths of the cosmos with great curiosity. Fuzz has made several missions to mars, the moon and Endor (home of cute space counterparts the Ewoks).

Mr. Meowgi is a wise old ninja, taking on the bad guys with his fast flying paws of justice.
Fuzz Aldrin and Mr. Meowgi are part of a series of upcoming kitty characters to make their way onto clothing and accessories available from Ex-Boyfriend.
Speaking of kitties, apparently the Japanese are also crazy for them. Of course who can resist that sort of cute?
