Help Us Raise Funds for the Animals

Every year the MD SPCA has a March for the Animals to help raise funds for its animal rescue efforts. Although they are a Maryland area charity, they lend aid to rescues all around, taking in rescues from neighboring states and sometimes even further afield. If you hang around here often, you know animal charities are a cause near and dear to my heart and that we donate a portion of the profits from this website to those causes.

If you’d like to help us help the beasts, please consider helping us out for this fundraiser and making a donation. Every little bit helps, and as always purchases on this site help us raise funds for the animals.

We’ll be collecting for the March For the Animals fundraiser now through April 17th. Look for some special fundraiser merchandise to go on sale in the next couple of weeks.

Fuzzy Friday: Pet Rescue for a Post-Rapture World

I couldn’t decide whether to file this under Fuzzy Friday or WTF Wednesday. It’s got a bit of both to it, but since I already had a very excellent video about sex with elves to share earlier this week, I decided to save this for today. Eternal Earth-Bound Pets has an offer for Christians preoccupied with the fate of their pets in a post-rapture world. Simply pay them $110.00 and these certified atheists will come collect your pet while you’re off enjoying the hereafter with Jesus. (They’ll collect a second pet for just $15.00, quite a bargain, amiright?)

This leaves me with more questions than it answers, primarily how enjoyable would the hereafter really be without my most beloved 4-legged family members? Thankfully, being not the religious type, I probably won’t be invited to this pet-free Christian after-party, so I guess I won’t worry too much about that. I’m perfectly happy to chill here with my fuzzy besties, anyway. Speaking of which, please enjoy the following photos of Bigby, he was being such a ham for the camera this week, I couldn’t resist.

Thirsty Thursday: Pick Your Poison

Did anyone else catch the amazing article on Slate last week about the US government’s poison-the-citizens initiative during prohibition? Apparently the US government was so angered by illegal booze consumption that officials ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohol. (Industrial alcohol was regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits.)

The government believed this scare tactic would get people to give up the drink. Instead, the poisoning killed an estimated 10,000 people. Way to go, Uncle Sam.

Any one else thankful to be living in a time where we can enjoy a cocktail without the government trying to kill us over it? I’ll toast to that.

And what shall we drink? How about a Poisoned Apple?

Just combine 1 oz rum with 1 oz Sour Apple Pucker. Top off with Sprite and serve over ice.

WTF Wednesday:There’s No Sex Like Elf Sex

Um, wtf? Seriously, I don’t think the WTF Wednesday “moniker” has ever been more apropos than in regard to this little wondrous snippet of interwebz magic. I find it kind of conflicting, too. While I think this girl’s actually published “book” (they must not have a word for zine in Iceland) is CRAMAZING, especially given the painstaking anatomical detail in the illustrations, it seems a bit tragic that such a relatively cute girl is so clearly insane and rabid with elf-lust.

Take heed, kiddies; this is what comes from a life lived in barren wastes listening to Bjork.

Maybe you thought the internet was a series of tubes, but apparently it’s made of cats.

Thirsty Thursday: Whiskey breath is better than no breath at all.

Wow. Maybe old people are right when they whine about how much better the past was! I especially love that slogan: “Night-before feeling on the morning after.” This is a good thing? This is something people craved back in the day? “Gee, I really miss the refreshing, clean sensation of irresponsibility and danger I so thoroughly enjoyed last night… if only there was a product that captured that same feeling, but was socially acceptable for me to enjoy throughout the day?” The perfect lead-in to that three-martini lunch with the swell fellows from accounting!

Next stop: Wino-town. For serious alcoholics, the only reasonable follow-up would be this absinthe dental floss. Lushtastic.

WTF Wednesday: HIV Prevention Just Got Real

Having been alive for most of hip-hop’s history, I like to think that I have a modicum of an understanding of it (despite being a white kid from Northern Virginia with a predilection for indie-rock). At its core, hip-hop culture is represented by three basic pillars: b-boy dancing, graffiti art, and the synergy of rapping and turntablism. A lot of extraneous fluff has coalesced around these pillars over the last three decades, but the essential elements are as listed above.

One thing I’ve always assumed over the course of these last 30 years is that only white people could look foolish by appropriating the cultural touchstones and slang of hip-hop. Not so; witness:

I think the most distressing part of this is the involvement of “Lady STD Killa”. Killa? Seriously? Now we’re misspelling purposely misspelled words? Where’s the ‘H’ at the end? Ghostface and Masta do not approve. Wu Tang Financial just cashed in your portfolio at a loss.
